The development of natural products as antimicrobial, anti-fouling or algicidal chemicals.

Natural products are important lead compounds for developing new bioactive compounds. Diatoms are a promising group of aquatic organisms as they produce many secondary metabolites with potential aquaculture and pharmaceutical applications. These secondary metabolites are thought to be involved in signalling processes, in mediating defence against predators, or are involved in contest competition with other diatoms and with bacteria. Methods are developed for the bioassay guided isolation and validation (including chemical synthesis) of bioactive compounds produced by the diatom microbiome.
