The continuous extension of the pool of amino acid derivatives will lead to a new technology platform in drug discovery and medical applications
In an effort to escape from evolutionary constraints and to circumvent problems associated with natural peptides, the development of peptidomimetic foldamers has gained a lot of attention because of applications ranging from drug discovery to material science. Scientific progress related to the synthesis of non-proteinogenic amino acids is crucial as the design of new folded backbones is dependent on the availability of novel monomers. Therefore, new synthetic methodologies are developed for the asymmetric synthesis of unexplored amino acid derivatives with unique structures and functions. In a next step, these newly synthesized amino acid building blocks are evaluated in novel foldamer applications.
