Improving drought predictions using satellite observations
International or national drought decision systems are important tools that can trigger human aid support or mitigating measures such as irrigation strategies.
The basis of these decision support systems in drought management are data derived from different sources. Radar remote sensing provides many of the necessary data. In the HYDRAS+ project (BELSPO) we are investigating whether and how observations of soil moisture obtained from radar and radiometers can improve model predictions. The project further aims at assessing and improving drought statistics.
