Cost-effective and reliable micropollutant removal in municipal wastewater treatment plants

Municipal wastewater treatment plants are the major point sources for organic micropollutants. Therefore, operators are investigating  advanced technologies to upgrade their plants and to meet future regulations. Ozonation is potentially most promising but no adequate control strategies exist. Hence, ozone is dosed using simple rules of thumb which is not cost-effective. We were able to establish a link between micropollutant removal and the role of effluent organic matter during ozonation. The relationships (models) developed allow for real-time control and monitoring of the ozonation process for microppollutant abatement.  This research was awarded the B-IWA research award.

Increased process insight supports better process design, leading to cost-effective and reliable operation.
