Because of their exceptional efficiency and splendid ecological profile, enzymes have attracted considerable attention as biocatalysts for the synthesis of various chemicals. However, they are not always stable under industrial conditions and do not necessarily display activity on man-made substrates. Engineering of enzymes is optimised by combining computer simulations (modelling, docking) with high-throughput screening (robotics). Mutants with improved properties can be obtained in less than a year. Projects are typically initiated in collaboration with companies, who determine the parameters for the target process. Examples include a transferase with a half-life at 60°C of more than one day, and an isomerase with a completely modified regiospecificity (>99%).
