Flow cytometry is a fast and accurate method to detect bacteria in aquatic samples. Statistical methods have been developed to allow fast and objective processing and characterization of flow cytometric data. These powerful methods have already been applied for sensitive screening of drinking water networks. Furthermore, they open up plenty of possibilities in the field of high throughput analysis of microbial communities, for both research and industry.
