Integration of biological, physical and chemical sciences with engineering and management techniques

Research themes

The Faculty integrates biological, physical and chemical sciences with engineering and management techniques. The five research themes are:

  1. Natural Capital
    Natural capital are the elements of natural ecosystems that yield flows of valuable ecosystem goods or services. Despite Natural Capital being at the heart of our economy and a cornerstone for human wellbeing, it's stocks are more and more depleted. To help resolving this huge global challenge, the Natural Capital Research Platform at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University develops innovative, credible, and use-driven approaches to better map, understand, manage and value the world's Natural Capital in order to support stakeholders worldwide. 
  2. Sustainable production of plants, animals and bioactive substances
    Efficient sustainable production of plants and animals (terrestrial and aquatic) and bioactive substances must be economically viable and ecologically sound. Technical and economic research optimises input/output balances related to soil, water, energy, nutrients, feed, etc, and applies principles of integrated pest and disease management to ecosystems.
  3. Green chemistry and the bio-based economy
    The Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at the UGent has, for many years, embraced the principles of green chemistry as a framework for research and education. Green chemistry is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances. The goal of green chemistry is to create better, safer chemicals while choosing the safest, most efficient ways to synthesize them and to reduce waste. The Faculty has introduced green chemistry in its research project portfolio through the use of renewable feedstocks, a shift towards more eco/tox-friendly products, development of sustainable production processes (for instance through process intensification and improvements of energy efficiency), generating less waste and high atom efficiency during chemical conversions and finally the application of natural products.
  4. Food and health
    Consumers want safe, convenient, healthy and tasty food.  The food supply chain is studied including safety (microbial, chemical, physical hazards), quality (sensorial, nutritional, texture and structure) and risk. Production chain management, consumer behaviour and improvements in nutritional quality of plant and animal products are researched by simulating human interaction with foodstuffs.
  5. Clean environmental technology
    Research innovates in environmental problems in the field of analysis, prevention and remediation. Contaminants in air, water and soil and their impact on ecosystems are analysed using ecological indices and models. Clean technology development aims to prevent environmental pollution, remediate environmental problems and improve waste management.
